The future of TV & Internet

TV is not dead (yet)

According to my good old friend Jeremy Clarkson of the BBC, the future of TV isn't very bright :

"For as long as most of us can remember, we've had something called schedules. Top Gear, for instance, goes out on a Sunday at 8pm. Just after something with Richard Hammond in it. And just before Richard Hammond on ice. Simple.

But very soon, the idea of sitting down at a specific time to watch a specific programme will end. Instead you'll watch whatever you want, whenever the mood takes you. You'll start at 9.14pm with Dr Who, And then after some music videos and a spot of pornography, you'll go to bed.

There won't be a BBC or an ITV or a Channel Four. There won't even be 'televisions'. There'll simply be a big vault of programmes which viewers will access on their computers."

None of what he says here is wrong, nor is it absolutely right either. What I mean is that there could be another theory on the future of TV (and newspapers, magazines, radio,...). Personnaly I don't think that the Internet will replace all of the traditional media. In fact I think they could, and should, use the Internet as a complementary medium.

Here is my point

What Internet gives you and that traditional media are unable to give you are some small extras. Such as exclusive information, time sparing or personalized contents. Therefore, I think traditional media should leave the task of bringing extras to the Internet and bring to the consumer what the Internet can't give.

Now the BBC are trying to bind traditionnal media together with the Internet. They are in fact broading their magazines. Take Top Gear for instance: the core media is the TV show. That show is basicaly seen by all petrolheads in Britain. What else do petrolheads consume ? Printed motoring magazines ? There you go then, here's your Top Gear paper magazine.

Hold Petrolheads are also active on the Internet ? Yep ! When you miss the show on TV, you can still watch them on Youtube. Until now, the Top Gear website has been quite desapointing. It's still good to visit it when you can't wait another week or another season to see the next TV show, or if you don't want to pay 8 euros to buy the paper magazine.

The problem with the Top Gear website is that most of what you find on it is old news : articles from last month's paper magazine, short clips of last episodes (way too short), and some other things you won't even read if you're not specificaly looking for them. It's true that people at Top Gear are trying to tease the audience for the next TV shows, but come on, don't do it with old stuff !

What the BBC should do now is create content specialy for their websites instead of using some old stuff in bitesizes. Oh, and stop deleting complete episodes on Youtube, that's a big mistake pals. Because if you let people watch the complete old shows on the Internet (unlike those tiny little clips of yours) you may attract them to the traditional TV show which they will be able to see in "première".

Give us some extras !

Renault's management team is as good as their cars...

When you apply for a job in reply to an advert, the least you expect from the company is that they will reply to you even if they're not interested. But there's a good way and a bad way to do that. The good way would be to say that, as an executive of this company, you are sorry that the applicant does not fit the job, bladibladibla...

But there's something even more important : give the reason(s) why you're not interested. Why is that so important ?

First it's a sign of respect and appreciation for the applicant and the time he spent in the process.
It gives the applicant an explanation for not being chosen, instead of letting him imagine other reasons that might be very negative and that he might spread around him.
An applicant is as important as a customer, don't turn him into a hater of the company. Respect your applicants.

Which translated into English goes something like this :

We thank you for the interest you show to our company by applying for an intern assistant to product communication position. Having deeply examined it, we are sorry to tell you that we can't give you a positive response.

In other words Renault is telling me to piss off ! Now I know that it is the classic email reply. But hang on a second, why do they answer me like that on a Monday morning (I sent my cv on Sunday) as they say on their website that they're looking for a communication assistant ? Am I incompetent ? Come on ! Just give a reason, even if it's a fake one (like we are sorry we already found someone).

Or maybe France is the worst country in the world where you can't find a job in a major company if you don't have an enginering degree. And I'm sure engineers know a great deal about marketing, advertising, media, online marketing.

So here's my useless (angry) tip : if you're thinking about buying a car, don't buy a Renault.

Dirty Dancing @ Mirano

Now you ought to know that I ain't very keen on trendy night clubs and that I like better to go out in a concert or in a bar, but this seemed like the place to be. The music is excellent if you're into electro, the girls are hot and elegant but oh so snob ! You kinda meet every kind of people there : straight, homosexuals, artists, preppy girls, wannabe models, hipsters,...

Can't tell you more about it. You have to go there and make your own opinion, and I think it's worth it.

Just keep in mind that it won't be cheap. And also, don't come with too many friends. Three sounds like a good number (with at least one lady). Expect that you'll be asked to walk away at least once (you can come back later but it will be more expensive).

Le Variétés

Hi folks ! If you are looking for cool place for a date, this might be the place to be. Why is that ? Well let me explain it to you.

First of all the place itself is pleasant. It just looks like an old French restaurant from the 50's.
It's not too noisy so you can have a quiet talk with your date.
The food is very good although the portions are a little bit too tiny. I had the roast chicken (surprisingly not too dry) with fries (excellent) and mushrooms (got enough of them, which is rare in a restaurant).
Prices are a bit high but it's worth it. Count 20€ per person.
Waiters are extremly polite and efficient.

When you're done with the food, you can head to the Belga right next to it and have a drink with your date. But don't expect to have a conversation there cause the room is way too noisy.

The greatest entertainment program is back on what's probably the best public TV channel in the whole world. I thought we'd never get the chance to see Clarkson, May and Hammond for some more caravan wrecking, tire smoking, drifting since the hamster (Richard Hammond) nearly killed himself in the last series. But they're back for good !

Sometimes, video games can generate a very strong imaginery, stronger than anything else you can see in the real world. Is advertising too intrusive ?

Ok it's always fun and exciting to find to media to advertise and put a message accross, but be careful not to be as intrusive as advertisements in futurama :

Somehow this makes me think of advertisements that are played before and after certain videos on a very famous website... You something or Goo something... er... Gootube ? No, that's clearly not it.

A TV ad you will never see in Europe

Keep it simple stupid

Why is it that European advertisers won't take a chance to do something different and unexpected that will make the audience laugh big time and give them that new dynamic image they're looking for ? Adpeople often see clients (advertisers scared to lose their money) coming up with a briefing asking them to create an ad that will make their brand look younger, cooler, more dynamic, and all that jazz. At first, art directors try to let their madness come out, several times. Each time, they face a desapproval from the client. So in the end they are forced to come up with the same kind of idea that has already been done in the past by the advertiser. And they love it because it's cheap, not too risky and, in their opinion, a good way to put their message accross.

Well have a look at this TV ad I just saw on the yes but no but yes blog:

Now can someone tell me why American TV ads are so much cooler than ours ? Come on guys even an American ad for Kellogs can make me laugh after I've been working several month on a campaign for the same product as I told you earlier on. I'd love to see ads like this one on my TV screen (even though I barely watch TV now). And don't you corporate people tell me that the American audience is different from the European audience. You're WRONG. Americans are always one step forward when it comes to advertising.
